ABOUT
WHAT DOES THE NAME MEAN?
"Undesign / Undesigning"
When I chose this name, I strongly considered that the word had multiple definitions, and that one of them was actually quite antithetical to my philosophy. But every time I considered an alternative concept, I kept getting drawn back to this word. And here's why; one of the definitions is this:
"Having no ulterior motive or fraudulent purpose" / "Not characterized by underhanded schemes or selfish motives"
Something that has always bothered me about modern life is the fact that money has negatively incentivized so much of our culture. It leads far too many people into doing the wrong things for the wrong reasons. And this can often be true of people in the design / build industry. People making impossible promises, providing quick and shoddy work, or even selling you things you don't want because it's more profitable for them.
To be clear, it's great to have opportunities to make money, especially when you're doing what you love. But money was never the driving force or the incentive. For me, one of the greatest joys in my life has been to see the look on someone's face when I can tell that my passion for creative design has just delivered something even better than than they expected, improving and enriching their family's life. I can't fully describe how rewarding that is.
That's what pushes me to do this. I'm chasing the high of creating uncompromising spaces and adding completely unexpected levels of value to the lives of others through my art form. And because of that singular incentive, I consistently do what I do in the most honest, transparent and altruistic way possible. Put simply... I do this in a very "undesigned" way.

HOW IT ALL BEGAN

A lifetime ago, during COVID, I was a full-time landscape designer, but I found myself with a steady stream of leads from commercial development clients who needed conceptual designs and architectural renderings. I happily found myself making a novel departure from my day job, and I was feeling growth through meeting all of these new and unfamiliar challenges. This was the original beginning of The UnDesign.
Back then, I was willing to take on any project at all, no matter what it was; a 300,000 sqft shopping center re-design, a boutique hotel concept, a restaurant, a clinic, a barbershop, a storage facility, an entire neighborhood of modular homes, and a fully-detailed, 10-acre wedding and event venue.
Around the time that I was starting to establish a respectable portfolio of commercial projects, my day-today role as a designer of luxury outdoor spaces for high-end residences was really starting to get interesting. I had gotten to a place where I was finally being entrusted with end-to-end client interactions and I was now developing my own projects with very little oversight.
After reaching several milestones in my landscape design career, like winning the "Million Dollar Pool Design Challenge", a brand new chapter full of exciting opportunities opened up. After a few years of exploring new places, collaborating with new teams and cultivating several important new relationships, I found myself at a crossroads needing to make a decision about who I was going to be and what I wanted to focus on.
I ultimately decided that I had more passion, more experience and more expertise in the field of luxury landscape design, and that it I owed to myself to channel all of my creativity and energy into that effort. This decision led to a re-birth and re-dedication of The UnDesign.
And now, I'd like nothing more than to share my love of design with you to help you achieve a dream that you've been pursuing as well. If you're a homeowner, an architect, an interior designer, a landscaper or a home builder, I'd like to connect and collaborate with you on your next project.
Here's to writing the next exciting chapter!
